A slice of Cypriot history in Paphos

When it comes to deciding where to take your summer holidays this year, Paphos in Cyprus is a brilliant choice if you’re after somewhere hot and sunny with glorious beaches and fantastic Mediterranean food! The climate in Cyprus is perfect for sun worshippers and Paphos itself has plenty to offer whether you’re looking for buzzing nightlife, a romantic couple’s break or a fun packed family holiday.

Sitting on the south-west coast of Cyprus, Paphos is the perfect location for beach lovers and anyone after a relaxing holiday, but it’s also got loads more on offer in terms of culture, history and sightseeing, so you won’t get bored if lazing on the beach all day isn’t your thing.

The area is rich in Byzantine era history and there are in fact twelve excellent museums here in Paphos, all of which make for an interesting day out when you get tired of lounging by the pool. One of the most popular museums here, and well worth a visit, is the Paphos Ethnographic Museum. Situated on 1 Exo Vrisis Street in Paphos, the museum is open to the public Monday to Saturday from 10am until 6pm (5pm in winter months) and 10am until 2pm on Sundays.

The Akteon Holiday Village provides an ideal base for visitors to Paphos looking to explore the museum, which is home to a multitude of fabulous old architects, including intricately carved wooden dowry chests, beautiful venetian glassware, fantastic pots and oil lamps dating back to Roman and geometric times and a classic head of the ancient god Apollo which dates back to the 5th century.

There are entire rooms in this old Paphos home-turned-museum dedicated to living examples of periods in Cyprus’s history, so visitors can get a real feel of what it was like to live on the island in times gone by. The country kitchen for example displays tools used by Cypriot housewives back in the day, and there’s a fully kitted out bedroom complete with old brass bed and a wardrobe full of traditional clothing and ceremonial costumes.

When you come to Paphos make sure you experience everything else this wonderful resort has to offer beyond the usual sun, sea and sand. As well as a rich history and culture, you can make the most of prime golfing and water sports opportunities if you like a more active holiday, as well as horse riding, cycling and hiking in the beautiful Paphos countryside.
