Plenty of great places to go in Devon

South Devon has plenty to offer people of all ages throughout the year, with a great mix of natural beauty and plenty of exciting things to do. The area is, of course, famed for its beaches and coastal towns but with so many to choose from it can be hard for those getting trains to Devon to know where’s worth heading.

Here we round up a few spots we think you might like to check out:

Teignmouth

This historic town is a great place to head and have a wander, as you’re sure to be taken by its charming, traditional appearance. It offers a family friendly beach and a stunning Victorian grand pier, offering locals and visitors alike great views. History buffs can find out more about the resort in years gone by at the Teign Heritage Centre, while those simply looking for seaside fun will find a variety of shops and attractions to keep them amused.

Totnes

The market town of Totnes is well known for offering visitors and locals alike a wide selection of independent stores and its support for ethical trade. A stroll along its streets is an enjoyable experience in itself, with a number of listed buildings and a 16th century Tudor guildhall. It’s a great place to go whatever the weather as among the things on offer are art galleries, museums, a steam railway and boat trips on the river Dart. Animal lovers might also want to pay a visit to the award-winning Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, particularly if you’re looking to keep the kids entertained.

Stoke Gabriel

This popular village is located at the head of a creek on the Dart estuary, which makes it a great choice for boating enthusiasts. But even those not wanting to take to the water will be able to enjoy the pretty surroundings, which include ancient trees in the churchyard and a selection of shops and pubs. The area is also known for crab fishing, so is a great place to take your little ones come rain or shine.

Dawlish

If you’re looking for a traditional seaside resort with plenty to keep you entertained, look no further than Dawlish. Those with train tickets to Devon will find coming in to the town along the seafront is a particularly scenic trip. Once you arrive, you can chill out on its sandy beach, enjoy the amusement arcades, get behind the wheel of a go-kart or try your hand at mini golf. There’s also a fab selection of shops and an 18-hole golf course, so there’s something to keep all sorts of people happy.
