The Caribbean is on most people’s wish list, and it’s certainly on mine. I dream of one day having the time and money to island hop to my heart’s content, however for now I will make do with immersing myself in one island at a time. One island that is certainly worth the time and money is the Dominican Republic.
Over the last few years, you might have noticed the number of cheaper deals heading to this part of the world, thanks to great all-inclusive resorts popping up around the island. I’d highly recommend taking advantage of one of these deals, as you’ll save money on food and drink before you even leave.

Unfortunately the down side is that your flight is more than likely going to connect in America, but this is no big deal when you consider your final destination! Make long-haul flying easier on the pocket and stress levels by checking out the range of airport extras that can be added to your travel plans, such as airport hotels, and airport parking.
Back to your final destination – what do you think of when you dream of Caribbean islands? For me, it’s all about the beach, and the Dominican doesn’t disappoint, with over 1000 to choose from! It’s not all about the sand and sea here though, as you’ll find more in the way of nature than on any of the other Caribbean islands. Rainforests, mountains and plenty of wildlife await you, as well as deep sea fishing, snorkelling, birdwatching, whale watching and white water rafting amongst some of the activities on offer.
If you’re booking an all-inclusive holiday, you’re more than likely going to be based at Punta Cana, with stunning beaches to laze away the hours on. Be sure to jump on a boat trip for a day’s relaxing and check out the scenery from a different viewpoint – it’s simply stunning. Whilst you’re out at sea, maybe head to Montecristi for some deep sea fishing and see what you can catch!
Of course, you won’t be short of water-sport activities based on the beach, and windsurfing is a particular favourite in the Dominican, with Cabarete famous for it, so if you fancying giving it a whirl, that’s where you need to be heading.
When the Caribbean stars make an appearance, the party starts in the Dominican, as you can expect music, dancing and a good time whichever part of the island you’re on. Most large hotels will have entertainment, as well as plenty of different menus for almost every palate. Be sure to try some traditional cuisine whilst you’re there, with seafood simply delicious and extremely fresh, all washed down with a refreshing glass of rum – well, whilst in the Caribbean …
These days, Caribbean holidays are much more accessible to all, and the Dominican is possibly one of the most affordable. Indulge even further with great airport hotels, when flying out of the capital.
Merengue, rum and plenty of sun – what more could you wish for?
