The Ultimate Greek Island Holiday Destinations

Like the sound of luxury Greece holidays? Well, who doesn’t? If you’re organising a trip to Greece, it’s well worth considering staying on one of the nation’s many gorgeous islands. Of course, there’s quite a lot of them, which can make choosing a little tricky – especially if you’re as indecisive as I am!

So, I’ve put together a list of the ultimate Greek islands to go to; fingers crossed it’ll help you pick!

Skiathos

Best for: Nightlife and beaches

Part of the Sporades group of islands, Skiathos has a reputation for having some of the nation’s best beaches. So, this is one of the ultimate destinations for ardent beach lovers who plan to spend as much time as possible on the sand. Koukounaries Beach is definitely one of the top places to head to, being among the most popular on the island and having plenty of water sports facilities to boot.

Since this island is almost as well known for its nightlife, it’s also great for partiers. Skiathos Town is where you’ll find most of the action, but if you want to combine your love of sand and nightlife, get yourself down to Banana Beach, where the cafes and restaurants host regular parties.

Kos

Best for: Beaches and historical attractions

Another member of the Sporades group, Kos also has a great reputation for its beaches (Agios Theologos is usually described as the most beautiful on the island, by the way). While Skiathos does have a few archaeological treasures, Kos really excels when it comes to attractions like this.

So, if you’re into your history, this is definitely the place to come. One of the hotspots is Kos Town, where you’ll find sites like the Castle of the Knights of St John (at the harbour) and Asklepion, an ancient complex just north of the town.

Corfu

Best for: Scenery, boating and experiencing a little cosmopolitan cafe culture

Dotted with charming fishing villages and scenic coves, Corfu is a gorgeous place for a luxury break. In fact, it’s often referred to as the prettiest Greek island of them all, so if you’re after a holiday destination with impressive scenery, this could well be the place for you.

All those villages and coves make it particularly perfect for anyone keen to do a bit of boating while they’re away, while the lively cosmopolitan atmosphere of Corfu town means it is a great place to experience some authentic cafe culture – especially in Spianada Square.

Santorini

Best for: Romance, scenery, sunsets and ultimate luxury

If you’re planning a romantic break, Santorini is by far and away the ultimate Greek island to choose. Virtually everything about Santorini is romantic – think incredible sunsets, dramatic cliff and coastal scenery and gorgeous blue-domed churches.

Even if you’re not planning a romantic getaway and you decide to come here (there’s plenty of room for groups of friends and singles too!), don’t miss the chance to watch the sun set – it really is mind-blowing here. The village of Oia is reputedly the best place to see it, since it gives you an unobstructed view.

Kefalonia

Best for: Walking, sophisticated getaways in an authentically Greek atmosphere, natural wonders

Probably one of the least commercialised Greek destinations, Kefalonia is perfect if you’re keen to soak up some authentic culture. It’s also a fantastic option for walkers, since there are so many great trails through the mountainous interior.

I think what’s really interesting about this island, though, is that it’s so steeped in myth. The Drogarati Caves, for instance, are said to have once housed a dragon. Plus, there are loads of amazing natural wonders to visit, like the underground Melissani Lake.

And, if you’re after luxury, this is definitely an island that should make your shortlist, thanks to its great selection of luxury hotels and sophisticated spots, such as Fiskardo.
