Zagreb is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and also its largest city. Located to the north west of the country, Zagreb is along the Sava River. (1) Upper Town (Gornji Grad)
It is a district in the central part of Zagreb. It houses most of the important sights of Zagreb. The Croatian Parliament as well as the city’s Cathedral, are located in the Gornji Grad district.
(2) Maksimir Park (Maksimirirski perivoj)
Founded in 1787, it is Zagreb’s oldest public park that boasts of a large variety of flora and fauna. The park is designed to be a natural habitat for many plant and animal species and also contains meadows, lakes and creeks. The Zagreb zoo forms a part of the park’s territory.
(3) Croatian National Theater In Zagreb
Built in 1836, it consists of a theater, a ballet house and an opera. The theater has been graced by many of Croatia’s finest artist, including the likes of poet Dimitrija Demeter, famous Croatian theater director Branko Gavella as well as some international artists like, José Carreras, Jean-Louis Barrault. Guests on entering the theater are greeted with the sight of the famous wall fountain, The Source of Life.
(4) Museum of Broken Relationships
The museum is dedicated to a strange and fascinating concept. The theme of the museum being failed love relationships. It holds personal objects belonging to former lovers and each has a brief description attached to it. It received the Kenneth Hudson Award for being the most innovative museum in Europe in 2011.
(5) Croatian Museum of Naive Art
Founded in 1952 it holds more than 1850 works of art that include sculptures, drawings, paintings of naive artists of the 20th century. The artists are mostly Croatian but the museum also has works of international artists and holds regular exhibitions and expert meets.
