Spain’s summer holiday popularity is no accident. With mile upon mile of golden sand coastline, fantastic facilities and the almost guarantee of bright sunshine, it’s no surprise. Salou, sat pretty on the Costa Daurada, is a popular choice for a summer package holiday, and its close proximity to bustling but charming Barcelona, and fun-filled Port Aventura, makes it the perfect choice for a two centre holiday.
Rested and raring to go, the good news is that Salou is only a short drive from Reus Airport, which means more time to spend on the beach! Platja Llevant is the main beach in resort, and you’ll find all the facilities you need for a day’s lazing or splashing. Water-sports are available, and if you’re up for it, give them a try, as you’ll surely do nothing but laugh!
I’d recommend hiring a car if you can, as the surrounding countryside is beautiful and this makes visiting nearby Barcelona a little more leisurely. Barcelona is also where you’ll get your major retail therapy hit, as the shops in Salou are plentiful, but not quite up to scratch when compared with the city. Alternatively, there is a market on Mondays at Via Roma, for a few out of the ordinary bargains.
Shopping and beach time would be my two main pastimes, however a wander down the pretty promenade is a good way to break the day up, and perfect for people watching. Nearby Port Aventura is also a must visit, but to get the most out of it, I’d consider a couple of days.
When night falls, Salou is glittering and bright in the night sky, with plenty of night-life to keep everyone occupied. There are many bars and clubs for your dancing needs, and lots of restaurants to feed you beforehand. Nobody will struggle to find a menu to suit, with lots of international dishes around, as well as more traditional dishes. This part of Spain has fantastic seafood, so give it a try.
Salou caters for everything your good, old summer holiday could ever want, with a laid-back vibe that is truly infectious.
Sun, sea, sand and a friendly Spanish welcome – hello Salou!
